Anila, the daughter of an East India Company soldier and a Bengali mother, knows her father will come back for her after her mother's death. To support herself she accompanies an explorer up the Ganges, as his illustrator. A superb read about a young girl taking hold of her life in the most difficult of circumstance at the turn of the nineteenth century.
