Joe Riley is a 13 year old boy growing up in Sydney during the Depression years. The story follows Joe as he is gets into mischief in his rough Sydney neighbourhood and then is sent by his parents to live at a Catholic Boarding School where he faces the darker side of humanity. He is then expelled and sent to a reform school known as the farm. Life is tough at the farm but through working the land and being with animals, he finds an inner strength within himself.
