Mount Gambier North Primary School

Premier’s Reading Challenge Ambassador and award-winning author, Mem Fox entertained students on a recent visit to Mount Gambier North Primary School.

Known for all-time favourite books like Possum Magic and Where is the Green Sheep?, Mem read some of her books in her usual animated way. The Magic Hat and Mem’s most recent publication, Meerkat Mayhem, were extremely popular with the younger students.

Mem highlighted why she supports the Premier’s Reading Challenge and asked that every student in the school ‘give it a go’ this year.

Students offered feedback about the PRC and Mem’s visit;

I like the Premier’s Reading Challenge because you get to read a lot, and you get rewarded for it. I think everyone should complete the PRC because it helps with your reading and learning new words, and it makes you have less screen time.  –  Caitlin, Year 6

I really really did enjoy Mem Fox reading because she made it more enthusiastic. It was really cool. Her coming here makes me think 100% that I will participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge his year.  –  Alfie, Year 6

And, from staff;

I like seeing the children motivated to read and proud of themselves when they deliver their completed form to me. The goals are achievable, students’ efforts are rewarded, and it helps with their confidence in general. Mem’s visit was inspiring. Watching the children engaged in listening to her storytelling was lovely. I think it will spark a new enthusiasm for reading and for a love of books. Truly magical.  –  Jacqui, Library Manager and PRC Coordinator

Premier’s Reading Challenge enhances the students’ comprehension and vocabulary because a range of books is being read to the children. Exposure to different books and authors helps students expand their vocabulary. The PRC provides a sense of accomplishment and recognition for students’ reading achievement. Students gain a deeper understanding of historical, cultural, and social settings which can inform their learning in various subjects. As students read a range of books, it helps them to make connections between different subjects and develop a broader understanding of the world.  –  Rosy, Foundation/Year 2 Teacher
