Congratulations on participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge in South Australia. Good on you for taking on the Challenge!
I love the way that reading allows us to explore new worlds, experience different lives, and puts us in the minds of characters different to ourselves. Whether we’re a possum trying to work magic with a lamington or following Terry and Andy in another crazy situation in a multi-story treehouse, books have the power to take us to some amazing places.
I challenge all South Australian students from Reception to Year 12 to read twelve books by 6 September 2024. But don’t feel you need to stop there: I’ve always found that reading one book seems to lead to another, and then another, and another…
The Challenge has been going from strength to strength for the last twenty years. Over 122,450 students from 696 schools – almost 97 per cent of all South Australian schools – took part in the 2023 Premier’s Reading Challenge, as did many students educated at home.
This is an outstanding result and I sincerely thank school staff and parents for your time and efforts in supporting children and their families to complete the Challenge.
You have experienced for yourselves the importance of reading and how it helps to set our kids up for a passion for learning and access to the life changing benefits of education – and how those benefits ripple out to families, to communities, and to our entire State.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a vital part of the State Government’s Literacy Guarantee for young South Australians. Information about the Challenge is available on the website www.prc.sa.edu.au, by telephoning (08) 8226 2006, or by email at prc@sa.gov.au. A school contact person is required to coordinate your school’s participation on behalf of all teachers, staff and students at your school.
I’m delighted that you’re joining us in the 2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge and I hope that you discover something this year that sparks your imagination and introduces you to exciting new worlds.
